Résumé
Liszt composa ce Chemin de Croix entre 1878 et 1879. Il avait alors 67 ans. Mais l'oeuvre ne fut créée qu'un demi-siècle plus tard en 1929 à Budapest.
Structurée en quinze parties (une hymne et les 14 stations) l'oeuvre étonne par sa modernité, sa diversité et son intériorité. Les chants sont soit a cappella, soit accompagnés très discrètement à l'orgue. Ce dernier comporte des parties solistes, également très dépouillées. L'inspiration musicale est très variée, allant du chant grégorien pour l'hymne initiale, à la liturgie luthérienne, jusqu'à reprendre quelques thèmes de la Passion selon saint Matthieu de Bach, et forme ainsi une composition très oecuménique.
