Dans les années 20, après avoir entendu le jeune Adrian Boult diriger sa deuxième Symphonie, Elgar déclara : « Ma réputation dans le futur est en sécurité dans vos mains. Votre direction était merveilleuse. Dieu vous bénisse. » Par la suite, Adrian Boult enregistra un nombre considérable d'oeuvres d'Elgar que l'on retrouve aujourd'hui dans ce coffret. Des années 30 aux années 70, c'est une vraie démarche artistique sur le long terme qui se déroule ici. La moitié de ces enregistrements sont disponible pour la première fois en CD.
