Résumé
Un pas de géant. Telle est la leçon qu'on retient à propos de « The Bends » en regard du précédent album de Radiohead, « Pablo Honey ». D'emblée, le groupe ne tolère guère la concurrence avec ces douze titres prestigieux et communique le frisson à ses auditeurs.Dès « Planet Telex », la guitare de Jonny Greenwood y égrène toute son ambition, allant jusqu'à faire date sur « Fake Plastic Trees » ou « My iron lung », tandis que la voix de Thom Yorke se fait tantôt douce, tantôt écorchée sur l'ensemble des morceaux. Le groupe a ouvert une boîte de Pandore mélodique et cherche à se démarquer pour toujours, sentiment que diffuse le dernier titre « Street Spirit », magnifique spirale mélancolique.
