Grinderman est né en 2004 lorsque Nick Cave travaillait sur l'album Abattoir Blues/The Lyre of Orpheus des Bad Seeds. Avec Martyn Casey, Warren Ellis et Jim Sclavunos, il développe un son plus brut et sauvage. Avec l'aide du producteur Nick Launay, ils enregistrent leur premier album, Grinderman, sorti le 5 mars 2007 ( Inclus les singles "No Pussy Blues" et "Get It On").
