Russell Oberlin est sans doute l'une des plus grandes merveilles vocales du XXe siècle. Par la beauté de son timbre, sa virtuosité, son expressivité et son naturel, le chanteur américain peut sans aucun doute être considéré comme le père de tous les contre-ténors modernes.Son répertoire s'étend des chants médiévaux aux chansons anglaises pour luth, en passant par la musique chorale de la Renaissance, les airs d'opéra baroques, les lieder allemands et les chansons de comédies musicales et de films. Quel autre chanteur disposerait d'une palette vocale aussi large ? Ce coffret est aussi une nouvelle rencontre avec un ensemble pionnier de la pratique historique de l'interprétation : New York Pro Musica, fondé par Noah Greenberg en 1952, un an avant le Concentus Musicus de Harnoncourt. Outre la première sortie mondiale de quatre oeuvres, la plupart des enregistrements sont publiés pour la première fois en dehors des États-Unis et du Royaume-Uni et ont été soigneusement remasterisés à partir des bandes originales pour ce coffret. A noter : Un essai détaillé de Pierre Ruhe, directeur des publications d'Early Music America, et de nombreuses images rares complètent l'édition.
