L'opéra de Georg Friedrich Haendel Siroe, rè di Persia fut créé le 17 février 1728 au Théâtre Haymarket de Londres. En cette
année qui suit l'accession de George II au trône d'Angleterre, ce n'est pas un hasard s'il forme avec Riccardo Primo, rè
d'Inghilterra et Tolomeo une sorte de triptyque consacré à des sujets royaux. Mais pour Haendel, c'est aussi une première
occasion de mettre en musique le livret d'un jeune débutant, Pietro Antonio Trapassi. Ce dernier deviendra le symbole même
de l'opéra italien du 18ème siècle et signera sous le nom de Metastasio (ou Métastase) plus de 27 livrets qui inspireront
quelque 850 oeuvres et 260 compositeurs.
