El-Bakkar était un ténor réputé et a joué dans plusieurs films en langue arabe, principalement dans le cinéma égyptien. Il s'est installé aux États-Unis en 1952 et a vécu à Brooklyn. Il a sorti plusieurs disques de musique arabe aux États-Unis. Il a également interprété un vendeur de tapis orientaux chantant dans la comédie musicale Fanny à Broadway, dans la scène du bazar oriental.
