Résumé
Après un premier album pour ECM New Series dédié à la composition contemporaine, l'Ensemble Belcanto se consacre dans ce nouveau disque à Ordo Virtutum, drame liturgique de Hildegard von Bingen composé autour de 1150, considéré comme la première oeuvre musicale de grande envergure dépassant la forme prescrite de la Messe.
Elle comporte 82 mélodies et met en scène les tiraillements de l'âme entre le démon et les vertus (Ordo virtutum = Le jeu des vertus).
Dans son interprétation, la chef de l'ensemble, Dietburg Spohr, renonce pourtant à un traitement littéralement historique de l'oeuvre et l'aborde comme si elle était écrite spécialement pour l'Ensemble Belcanto.
