Résumé
Arthur Sullivan est surtout connu aujourd'hui pour ses opéras savoyards avec W.S. Gilbert, mais de son vivant, Sullivan était également célèbre pour son église, sa salle de concert et ses oeuvres scéniques. Ces trois ensembles de musique de scène montrent sa polyvalence dans le genre. La musique de The Merry Wives of Windsor a une jovialité et une légèreté qui correspondent à son ambiance de pantomime, tandis que la suite de concert de Macbeth mêle tension nerveuse et tragédie imminente. En revanche, le roi Arthur exigeait l'une des spécialités de Sullivan, une séquence de choeurs, édités après sa mort dans cette suite évocatrice.
