Résumé
Créé en 1840 à l'Opéra de Paris, "Les Martyrs" de Donizetti s'appelait initialement "Poliuto" : à cause de son contenu religieux racontant la tragédie des martyrs chrétiens, il a été interdit en Italie. Fâché de la décision des censeurs romains, Donizetti s'est exilé à Paris où son opéra, baptisé "Les Martyrs" va triompher et assurer au compositeur une réputation internationale.
Pour cette production, le chef Mark Elder a réuni autour de l'Orchestra of The Age of Enlightenment des artistes aux qualités exceptionnelles : Michael Spyres et Joyce El Khoury pour les rôles principaux, rejoints par David Kempster, Wynne Evans, Brindley Sherratt et Clive Bayley.
Le livret étant en français, l'ensemble des chanteurs s'est plongé dans un travail très précis sur la prononciation et le résultat est tout à fait convainquant, à la hauteur des attentes d'un public français et francophile, comme l'était Donizetti lui-même.
