Enregistrée en avril 2013 à l'occasion de l'année Britten, cette production de 2010 réunit une distribution exclusivement anglaise, comptant notamment le jeune Michael Clayton-Jolly, 11 ans, dans le rôle de Miles. Le regretté Sir Colin Davis devait initialement être à la baguette, et c'est Richard Farnes, son successeur désigné, qui fut naturellement son remplaçant.
En 1932, Britten, âgé de 18 ans, entendit à la radio une « merveilleuse mais effrayante » version de la pièce d'Henry James, Le Tour d'écrou. Sa version Britten, créée en 1954, est un opéra de chambre en un prologue et deux actes. L'histoire est celle d'une gouvernante et d'une intendante qui tentent de protéger deux enfants, Miles et Flora, des événements étranges qui se déroulent dans le parce de leur maison de la campagne anglaise.
