Il était le fondateur du groupe que Prince a tenté en vain de recruter au milieu/fin des années 80, Tony! Toni! Toné! suivi par le supergroupe R & B Lucy Pearl.'Instant Vintage' est vraiment "gospeldélique", avec de la soul et du funk. Raphael Saadiq a un esprit très créatif et il traverse sa musique. Les morceaux hors concours qui mettent en valeur le meilleur du talent de Saadiq pour les riffs accrocheurs, les mélodies mémorables et offrent même un aperçu de son futur travail rétro-trempé et salué par la critique sont : «Body Parts», «Be Here», «Still Ray», «People »,« What's Life Like ». Un classique instantané!
