Hee-Haw

Hee-Haw, compilation parue en 1983, regroupe les premiers enregistrements de The Birthday Party, alors encore à cheval entre leur nom originel The Boys Next Door et leur mutation chaotique. À travers ces titres abrasifs et déjà hantés, on assiste à la genèse d’un son radical mêlant post-punk, gothique naissant et éclats de violence poétique.
Cet album trace la matrice d’un style qui explosera sur Prayers on Fire et Junkyard, tout en conservant une fraîcheur brutale et instable. Il éclaire les fondations d’un groupe essentiel, mené par un Nick Cave déjà habité. Dans leur discographie, Hee-Haw fait figure de manifeste primitif, à la fois brut et prophétique.
