Gene Autry, ou le cow-boy chanteur, était un chanteur de country des années 1930 qui a percé sur le plan musical avec „That Silver Haired Daddy of Mine“. Avec plus de 500 000 exemplaires vendus en un an, il est devenu une célébrité aux États-Unis. Sa maison de disques a fait un disque recouvert d‘or et de bronze pour rendre son succès visible. Ainsi est né le premier "disque d‘or" non officiel. Il devait son nom de "Singing Cowboy" à de nombreux westerns hollywoodiens dans lesquels il jouait avec succès. Des tubes oubliés comme "Back in the saddle again", "Don‘t fence me in", "In the jailhouse now", "Texas plains", "South of the border","Yodelling hobo" et "You are my sunshine" ont fait de lui l‘un des chanteurs de country les plus populaires de tous les temps. Aujourd‘hui encore, Gene Autry est le seul artiste à posséder cinq étoiles au Hollywood Hall of Fame dans les catégories suivantes : film, télévision, théâtre, musique et radio.
