Stan Getz aura commencé par jouer du swing, jusqu'à ce qu'il entende Charlie Parker. Il s'essayera alors au bebop, avant d'orienter son jeu vers un jazz soft, moelleux et détendu, sous l'influence de Lester Young. Il réalisera sa propre synthèse de ces différents styles au début des années cinquante, et produira ainsi un jeu original, inspiré et sophistiqué, sublimé par un son aussi doux que chaleureux, qui en fera l'un des plus grands saxophonistes de l'ère cool et un remarquable exemple de musicien impressionniste.
