Un nouvel enregistrement consacré aux grands rôles de heldentenor wagnérien est devenu une rareté aujourd'hui, tant ce type de voix se compte sur les doigts d'une main. Mais les prestations de Simon O'Neill dans les grands théâtres internationaux lui ont valu d'être acclamé tel un Heldentenor parmi les plus remarquables d'aujourd'hui. Né en Nouvelle-Zélande en 1971, l'artiste a achevé sa formation au Julliard Opera Center en 2002. C'est le grand baryton basse Donald McIntyre qui l'a guidé vers Wagner et une fois qu'il fut devenu la doublure de Placido Domingo dans Siegmund de la Walkyrie à New York, sa carrière était faite. Que ce soit au Met ou à Covent Garden, il fut qualifié récemment de « ténor wagnérien de sa génération ».Aujourd'hui parait cet enregistrement qui regroupe aussi bien les rôles héroïques de Siegmund et Siegfried, et ceux plus lyriques de Lohengrin et Parsifal. L'artiste y fait preuve d'une belle projection, d'aigus insolents et d'un style parfaitement idiomatique dans ce répertoire.
