Benjamin Britten, dont on fêtera le centenaire de la naissance l'an prochain, est certainement le compositeur anglais majeur du 20e siècle. Très connu pour son opéra Peter Grimmes ou son War Requiem, il est aussi l'auteur d'une célèbre Sérénade pour ténor, cor & cordes, ou encore du Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra, composé pour initier le jeune public aux instruments de l'orchestre, en partant d'un thème de Purcell successivement exposé par tous les instruments de l'orchestre à travers plusieurs variations.
