Opéra en 5 actes. Libretto inspiré de Viktor von Scheffel. Le sort du moine en mal d'amour Ekkehard se déroule dans le contexte historique de la bataille contre le paganisme et l'invasion hunnoise - des choses que le cadre large et somptueux du grand-opéra justifie non seulement mais exige virtuellement.Abert a mis ce texte très hétéroclite en musique de manière à ce que chacun des divers mondes et situations reçoive son expression appropriée, essayant d'égaler "à peu près tous les styles représentés dans l'opéra aujourd'hui". Cependant, son approche n'est pas celle d'un simple éclectisme; toute l'oeuvre se déroule dans le langage tonal entièrement individuel qu'il avait développé dans ses précédents opéras.Le jeune ténor Jonas Kaufmann avec son timbre brillant proposait les meilleures conditions pour représenter le rôle principal dans cet opéra presque inconnu. Cette production était l'un des premiers enregistrements en général pour lui, maintenant remasterisé et à nouveau publié. Avec fourreau.
