En 1663, une terrible épidémie de peste décime la ville de Hamburg emportant de nombreux amis, collègues et la femme du principal musicien de la ville : Matthias Weckmann. Ces évènements tragiques lui inspirent des compositions visionnaires, basées sur des textes bibliques évoquant la désolation, l'abandon, la destruction mais aussi la lutte et l'espoir.
