Il y a 75 ans disparaissait la chanteuse Bessie Smith (1894-1937) si justement surnommée « l'impératrice du blues ».

Elle effectue toute sa carrière chez Columbia où elle signe un contrat en 1922 et où elle enregistre avec des vedettes telles que Louis Armstrong, James P. Johnson, Fletcher Henderson, Don Redman, Buster Bailey, Clarence Williams, Jack Teagarden et bien d'autres.

Ce coffret contient l'intégrale de ces faces fixées entre 1923 et 1933 avec les incontournables Downhearted Blues, St. Louis Blues, A Good Man Is Hard To Find, I Need A Little Sugar In My Bowl, Gimme A Pigfoot, et bien d'autres.

Considérée comme la plus grande chanteuse de blues du monde Bessie Smith a eu une influence musicale importante sur des chanteuses comme Mahalia Jackson, Billie Holiday, Sarah Vaughan, Dinah Washington, Nina Simone, Janis Joplin et Cassandra Wilson.
