Résumé
Brahms écrivit ses deux "Sonates pour clarinette" après avoir mis fin à sa carrière de compositeur et les dédia à Richard Mühlfeld dont il était très admirateur. Même s'il les décrit comme de modestes sonates avec piano, ces oeuvres sont d'une remarquable intensité et chacune dotée d'un mouvement Allegro appassionato. L'oeuvre de Brahms fut défendue avec dévotion par le compositeur, chef, pianiste et professeur Carl Reinecke, dont les compositions ne connurent pas le même succès. Sa sonate "Undine", originellement écrite pour flûte et piano, et son "Introduction et Allegro appassionato" citent toutes deux un autre illustre contemporain, Robert Schumann.
