Fondé en 1998, OKKERVIL RIVER est au départ un trio, mené par le songwriter WILL SHEFF, véritable âme de groupe,accompagné par ZACH THOMAS à la basse et SETH WARREN à la batterie. Le groupe affirme son style emprunté à la fois à folk et à l'indie rock et 2005 marque l'explosion du groupe quand sort Black Sheep Boy, un album à l'écriture raffinée, fulgurante et poignante, et son EP subséquent, Black Sheep Boy Appendix, l'année d'après. Pour célébrer les 10 ans de l'album, le label Jagjaguwar sort un box set comprenant l'album original, l'EP, Black Sheep Boy Appendix et un 3ème album bonus incluant des titres exclusifs, jamais réalisés.
