Between the films

In the almost seventy years since its first launch, the Berlinale has morphed into one of the leading film festivals and ranks amongst the industry's most distinguished events worldwide. Every year, the film festival produces images, which literally «go around the world».This book presents a selection of these photos from the archive of the Deutsche Kinemathek. It ranges from the 1950s right up to the present day. The title Between the Films points to the countless moments away from the red carpet - frequently hidden from the public gaze. The at times vivacious press conferences are featured, as well as receptions with lavish buffets, and even the rare instances of calm amidst the hustle and bustle of the festival days are depicted.Not only do all the shots mirror the history and radical changes of the Berlinale, but they also show the development of Berlin itself and the transformations within the film industry, as revealed by the design of the interiors, by the changes in fashion, and perhaps even more by the demeanor of the people in the pictures and their attitude toward the photojournalists.
