En publiant "Amaryllis" le grand trio de jazz américain faisait un retour au premier plan éblouissant après le succès de son disque précédent "Nothing Ever Was, Anyway" paru en 1997. La formation y proposait un répertoire à la fois réfléchi, émouvant, joyeux et viscéralement enthousiasmant. Certains des thèmes étaient déjà bien connus, presque des classiques du "nouveau jazz" - comme par exemple «Rounds» de Marilyn Crispell, «Requiem» et «December Wings» de Gary Peacock, ou «Conception Vessel» de Paul Motian, quand d'autres, totalement inédits, se présentaient comme des sortes de ballades free improvisées d'une beauté surprenante.
