Sans faire aucune concession sur les tendances de l'époque, Kenny Clarke et
Francy Boland ont réussi le pari de réaliser un orchestre de jazz intemporel et
unique, rassemblant 17 musiciens européens et américains, pour deux douzaines
d'albums au swing positif et aux mélodies sophistiquées (on y retrouve les trompettistes
Benny Bailey et Idrees Sulieman, les saxophonistes Johnny Griffin et
Ronnie Scott...).
« All Smiles », enregistré en 1968, représenta l'apogée d'un Big Band qui a eu le
désir de faire revivre les plus grandes traditions du jazz, le tout mis en valeur par les
arrangements avant-gardistes de Boland.
