Ce nouveau volume de la série Bootleg primée raconte l'histoire de l'émergence et de la maturation de Dylan en tant qu'auteur-compositeur et interprète, du Minnesota à la bohème de Greenwich Village au début des années 1960. Il inclut des prises rares de Columbia Records, des enregistrements effectués lors de concerts en club, dans de petites réunions informelles, dans des appartements d'amis, et lors de jam sessions dans des lieux de rencontre de musiciens aujourd'hui disparus.

Le coffret deluxe 8CD comprend 139 titres - 48 performances jamais enregistrées auparavant, ainsi que 38 morceaux très rares, un livre relié avec des notes de pochette approfondies par Sean Wilentz et plus de 100 photographies rares. Les deux derniers disques du coffret consistent en l'enregistrement complet inédit du concert emblématique de Dylan en 1963 au Carnegie Hall, mixé à partir des bandes originales.
