Dirigé par Wayne Kramer, membre fondateur du groupe, et produit par l'emblématique Bob Ezrin, Heavy Lifting marque une étape importante : la sortie d'un nouvel album du groupe MC5, 53 ans après leur dernier album en 1971. La communauté musicale et les plus grandes stars du rock ont récemment pleuré la disparition de Wayne Kramer, membre fondateur du MC5, et de Dennis "Machine Gun" Thompson, les derniers membres de la formation originale.
L'album 'Heavy Lifting' est composé de musiciens invités, dont Slash, Tom Morello, William Duvall (Alice in Chains), Vernon Reid (Living Colour), Tim McIlrath (Rise Against), et bien d'autres encore.
